The solar is a renewable energy. It is called renewable energy to that which is not exhausted by much it is used. Other renewables are eg biomass, wind power, tidal power, sea-, or geothermal energy - the subsoil.

There are different methods of harnessing solar energy. There is solar thermal energy, which is to harness the sun to generate heat for hot water and apply it to home heating.

You can also generate electricity with solar energy in this case, is called photovoltaics. The main uses of photovoltaic solar energy are self-sufficiency where the national grid fails, and the sale of electricity to the utility company.

There are other uses. With solar thermal energy, eg heat is used to produce steam. The steam drives a turbine that produces electricity.

There are also solar cookers, used especially in developing countries where supplies of fossil fuels or electricity is unreliable, or where people can not afford them. In these countries usually use wood for cooking, but there is deforestation in many of them, and solar energy is emerging as one of the best alternatives.
