Hot water by solar energy in Los Angeles, California

Only a few years ago, it was difficult to find news on climate change in the media.

Back at the end of 205, when Soliclima first started participating in writing to raise an awareness about this subject, it was difficult to find information on climate change. But, only four years later, even the United States accepts that climate change is a fact and it´s generated by human activity.

As a result of this awareness, the use of renewable energies to replace fossil fuels and prevent CO2 emissions is increasingly spreading throughout the globe.

There are different options within the world of renewable energies. Some are within the reach of ordinary citizens and others, not. Among the steps any citizen can take are the ones which are detailed below.

In apartment buildings, the community may reach an agreement to place a solar energy installation on the roof. It can be solar thermal, to generate hot water for the building, in which case they would receive a substantial grant if the building doesn´t already have an installation of this type or, photovoltaic, for the sale of electricity to the grid, that may also qualify for subsidies.

Another option available for apartment buildings is the use of a biomass boiler for central heating. The type of boiler that we suggest is a pellet boiler, small wooden chip s made from wood waste. It is a renewable fuel and more economic than fossil fuels. There is still another option, which is to choose a high-performance boiler, whether gas or diesel.

Single family homes have many more options, especially if they are not built yet. What we recommend at Soliclima in order to have a more efficient home is, mostly, to install a solar hot water and heating systems, including a radiant floor system as the heating transmitter. The energy supply system should be based on a heat pump if the radiant floor will be used as air conditioning. If it´s only used for heating, a pellet or a high performance boiler, would be sufficient.

Another of our recommendations for buildings still in the planning stages is to discuss, from the very beginning, the use of, not only radiant floor heating, but, also, a water recycling system. It is convenient to have these systems in mind before building the house, because, installing them after the house is finished, it´s an expense and headache that we can easily save ourselves. Water is an essential natural resource that we have been wasting for a long time. Climate change is opening our eyes to the need to, not only save energy, but our water resources. By recycling water from sinks and showers or wastewater from the house, we can have thousands of liters for free throughout the year to fill the reservoir or for washing, cleaning and watering the garden. Th e advantage is not only economic: In the case of water supply stoppages, we can ensure that we´ll have this liquid to cover the most basic needs of the household.
