Solar thermal energy can produce heat. This heat can be used only for generating solar hot water or can be applied for domestic heating as well.

When we use it only to produce solar hot water, we can the average of covered consumed energy is 95% across the year. When we want to apply it to heating, however, facilities cannot be optimized to cover 100% due to technical reasons. It could only be used three months in the whole year, overheating in summer could be a problem decreasing lifetime of the facility.

There are different types of panels or solar collectors. Most used in domestic heating have a much higher performance, because their pipes are isolated with vacuum. They are therefore called vacuum solar collectors.
