We all know that the sun does not shine equally throughout the year. In winter, it shines less and this is not due only because there are more cloudy days, but, because the tilt of the Earth keeps changing during the seasons. In summer the sun's rays are coming from directly overhead and in winter they are spread over a greater surface area, lowering its calorific value. For this reason, when installing a solar energy installation, it´s necessary to gauge what will work best in winter and put the number of plates that will meet winter´s demand and exceed them in the summer when the sun rays are more perpendicular and less hot water is needed for showering.
This means that, the extra heat from the summertime, needs to be stored, somehow. Normally, the controlling device of the solar installation, resolves this issue by automatically regulating the temperature inside the accumulator, but, in the event that there is a swimming pool at the house where the solar hot water is being installed, the excess heat can be used to heat an outdoor swimming pool and, thus, extend the bathing season.
