Solar energy can be thermal or photovoltaic.

Photovoltaic solar energy takes advantage of the ability that some semiconductors have of creating electricity. Photovoltaic modules are composed of solar cells made out of silicon, although, some new materials are already beginning to become available. The photons that solar radiation produces, generate the movement of electrons in the silicon, that is to say, the electricity that we can later use.

Solar thermal energy, by contrast, is a completely different energy. Panels accumulate heat from the sun and this heat is transmitted to the drinking water in the house for showers, faucets or the heating system. Solar thermal energy is not used only in the domestic sphere. In Andalusia, for example, hospitals are required by law to utilize solar thermal installations to generate hot water. And indeed, all new buildings within the Spanish State, must cover a percentage of their hot water needs, through solar thermal energy, although, this percentage varies depending on the geographic location, since, the amount of solar radiation received is not the same, for example, in Andalucia, than in Cantabria. Also, hotels and businesses that offer showers to its staff have shown their increasing interest in such installations. We´ve had clients who have asked us for this type of installation in order to use the& nbsp;hot water for their industrial processes, particularly, in the daily cleaning of industries that generate a lot of dirt.

Another renewable energy also subsidized is, geothermal energy, which takes advantage of a specific characteristic of the subsoil, that being, that it keeps a constant temperature throughout the year, independenly from the outside temperature. This way, through a geothermal heat pump, we can take that temperature for heating or cooling the house, releasing heat to the subsoil when we want cool the house and absorbing heat from it, when we want to heat it.

Finally, we also have eolic or wind energy - small power aerogenerators or turbines for homes or farms located in very windy areas - and biomass. Biomass can be used in electricity producing power plants, but, at the household level, it operates through boilers or stoves generally fueled by pellets, which are recycled wooden chips from the timber and forestry industries residual waste. There are boilers that use other materials such as almond shells and olive bones, but, its use is highly specialized and there is only acces to this renewable fuels in the geographical areas where there is a large agricultural production of them.
