Concentration photovoltaics has its origin in the space race?

The desire to slow climate change resulting in a boom in renewable energy research. In this installation talk about solar energy photovoltaic concentration .

It has not yet reached the level of trade, but experts think that once it is mature, it may replace conventional photovoltaic solar energy, considering even lower costs.

Like many other things, concentration photovoltaics (CPV) has us out of the blue ... it comes from space research. In fact, the satellites used to replenish their systems. The need for a continuous power source up there to power these devices led to the use of photovoltaics, but was necessary to develop special, with a higher return while less floor space, it was essential to minimize weight team. Hence, we used a more powerful semiconductor silicon, gallium arsenide, which in turn is considerably more expensive. In order to increase productivity to the maximum, using lenses, mirrors or prisms to concentrate sunlight on the cell.

This technology also has a drawback, which is that it needs sunlight to be productive, and therefore only really be used in very sunny countries, probably in the near Ecuador and those close to deserts, such as northern Africa.
