Construction of the world's largest offshore wind farm, the London Array, starts
The total capacity of the park will be1GW. Once completed, it will produce enough electricity for one fourth of the London urban area.
Offshore work is scheduled to begin in 2011 and onshore, this summer. Wind turbines will be installed by Siemens and will have 3.6 MW of power.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said about the project:"The London Array is a flagship project in our drive to cut emissions by 80% by 2050 and meet future energy needs. The UK is a world leader in offshore wind farms, creating jobs and prosperity for the economy. That's why we have increased our support for this technology as we move towards a low carbon future."
Masdar, a company focused on sustainable development in the oil state of Abu Dhabi, holds a 20% share of the project, with the goal of not giving up its worldwide leadership, once oil loses its position in the international market. Masdar has also invested in thermoelectric in southern Spain.
After some uncertainty about the project´s funding and the withdrawal of Shell, Danish energy company DONG, the major shareholder, announced the go ahead for the first phase of the project.
