Abengoa keeps betting strongly on solar thermal energy, opening the PS20
Despite the crisis, Spain continues to be an international leader in renewable energies. First was photovoltaic, which after racing last year to complete its projects before the legal framework changed, the Spanish market became the one with the most PV power installed in the world.
Abengoa is now putting Spain in the forefront of solar thermal energy. There are only two commercial central tower solar thermoelectric plants in the world and both are in Spain, specifically near Seville, where the Andalusian company has a mega thermoelectric project in progress of which, this plant that recently opened, is just a part. The PS20 is the second commercial thermoelectric energy plant in the world and also the largest, with 20MW of power that can provide electricity to 10,000 homes.
The first commercial plant of this type also belongs to Abengoa and it´s in the same Solucar Complex. Soon, four additional plants of 50 MW each, will be installed in the same complex.
The operation of a thermoelectric plant with central tower consists of a field of heliostats that follow the sun and direct the sunlight towards the top of the tower. There, the high temperatures produced generate the steam that moves a turbine which in turn produces electricity.
