Biomass has been unknown for a long time in our country, but has been widely used in other countries with more forestry tradition, such as Austria. Most of the boilers and stoves that utilize biomass use pellets, which are little chips made of wood and forest debris, although, boilers that consume untreated residues, such as olive bones, almond shells or pruning remains from different vegetal species, can also be found. Naturally, there are boilers that use the traditional firewood.

Better known than biomass is solar energy, (both thermal and photovoltaic) and wind energy, which utilizes giant wind turbines, installed in wind farms and operated by the large energy companies and also, there are small wind turbines, which are those used in domestic installations.

There are others, like sea energy, where Spain also seems to have a great future, especially in the north and west of the peninsula, which are hit by strong waves. Another option is geothermal energy, which exploits the subsoil´s maintained uniform temperature throughout the year, absorbing it to generate heat or releasing it for cooling.
